Why Certify?

High-power rocketry in the UK is governed by the UK Rocketry Association (UKRA) in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Authority and local clubs. Certification gives you:

Level 1 — Your First Taste of HPR

Motor limits: H or I class (impulse ≤ 640 N·s)
Altitude envelope: typically < 3 000 ft AGL at most UK sites

Objective — prove you can build & recover a high-power rocket safely.

🧠 Tip: A well-finished paint job and tidy avionics bay make a strong first impression on the certification panel.

Level 2 — Bigger Motors, Dual Deployment

Motor limits: J or K class (impulse ≤ 5 120 N·s)

Objective — demonstrate competency with electronics & more energetic motors.

🔧 Pro Move: add a backup altimeter on a separate battery & charge to showcase risk-mitigation best practice.

Level 3 — Expert Status

Motor limits: L or M class (impulse ≤ 40 960 N·s)

Objective — plan, document & execute a complex project under mentorship.

On successful flight & documentation, you join an elite < 200-person community of UK L3 flyers — opening doors to hybrid & liquid propulsion projects, sponsorship deals, and outreach opportunities.
